The Alexander Keiller bedroom is named after a Scottish archaeologist and businessman who worked on an extensive prehistoric site at Avebury in Wiltshire, England. Keiller was heir to the marmalade business of his family, James Keiller & Son that had been established in 1797 in Dundee, and exported marmalade and confectionery across the British Empire.

He used his wealth to acquire a total of 950 acres (3.8 km2) of land in Avebury for preservation and he conducted excavations, re-erected stones on the Avebury site, and created a museum to interpret the site. He also pioneered aerial photography for archaeological interpretation.

Keiller leased and restored Avebury Manor & Garden, now a National Trust property consisting of an early 16th-century manor house and its surrounding garden.

Silbury Hill near Avebury, Wiltshire

Named after a prehistoric artificial chalk mound near Avebury in the English county of Wiltshire. It is part of the Stonehenge, Avebury and Associated Sites UNESCO World Heritage Site.

At 30 metres (98 ft) high, Silbury Hill – which is part of the complex of Neolithic monuments around Avebury, which includes the Avebury Ring and West Kennet Long Barrow – is the tallest prehistoric human-made mound in Europe and one of the largest in the world; it is similar in size to some of the smaller Egyptian pyramids.

Archaeologists calculate that Silbury Hill was built about 4,750 years ago and that it took 18 million man-hours, or 500 men working for 15 years, to deposit and shape 248,000 cubic metres of earth. The exact purpose of the hill is unknown, though various suggestions have been put forward.

This room is en-suite with a comfortable Double bed and although Avebury’s pre-historic stones are walking distance away, in your room you have the modern luxuries of a flat screen TV and tea/coffee making facilities.

The West Kennet Long Barrow is situated on the skyline to the south of Silbury Hill (approx. 2 miles from Dorwyn Manor). It consists of a 104mtr long earthen bank with a series of stone chambers at its eastern end. The bank tapers gently away from its chambered end and has the remains of quarry ditches along each side. The construction of the West Kennet Long Barrow commenced about 3600 BC, which is some 400 years before the first stage of Stonehenge, and it was in use until around 2500 BC. There is still some mystery about how it was used, although archaeological excavations in 1859 and 1955-56 found at least 46 burials.

The Sanctuary at Dorwyn Manor

Begun in about 3000 BC, The Sanctuary was originally a complex circular arrangement of timber posts,
which were later replaced by stones. These components have now long since been replaced by concrete slabs and although its function still remains a mystery, it possibly enshrined the dwelling place of some revered person, and certainly huge numbers of human bones were found here, suggesting elaborate death rites and ceremonies.

Later, West Kennet Avenue was constructed to connect it with then newly-built Avebury, reinforcing the status of this enigmatic but clearly very important site.

The Sanctuary room at Dorwyn Manor is en-suite with a comfortable King Size bed and a single bed. Although Avebury’s pre-historic stones are walking distance away, in your room you have the modern luxuries of a flat screen TV and tea/coffee making facilities.

Windmill Hill is a Neolithic causewayed enclosure in the county of Wiltshire, part of the Avebury World Heritage Site, about 1 mile northwest of Avebury. Enclosing an area of 21 acres, it is the largest known causewayed enclosure in Britain.

The site was bought by Alexander Keiller in 1924 and excavated over several seasons from 1926–1929 by Keiller and Harold St George Gray. Windmill Hill is almost like a ‘brand name’ among archaeologists; the pottery finds at this site were so distinctive that they gave their name to similar finds all over Britain, and ‘Windmill Hill’ became almost synonymous with a style of ancient pottery and the time period and culture it embodied.

The reason that Windmill Hill has such a high profile is simple; it was one of the first prehistoric sites to be thoroughly investigated, and provided a lot of information on the life of early agricultural communities in England.

This Windmill Hill room at Dorwyn Manor is en-suite with a comfortable Double bed and although Avebury’s pre-historic stones are walking distance away, in your room you have the modern luxuries of a flat screen TV and tea/coffee making facilities.

The Henge

The Henge, Avebury

The Henge room

The Avebury monument is a henge, a type of monument consisting of a large circular bank with an internal ditch. Although the henge is not perfectly circular, it has a diameter of about 420 metres (460 yd) across. The only known comparable sites of similar date are only a quarter of the size of Avebury.

Avebury was one of a group of monumental sites that were established in this region during the Neolithic. Its monuments comprise the henge and associated long barrows, stone circles, avenues, and a causewayed enclosure.

The Henge room at Dorwyn Manor has a comfortable King Size bed, together with a single bed, with an en-suite bathroom. Although Avebury’s pre-historic stones are only walking distance away, in your room you have the modern luxuries of a flat screen TV and tea/coffee making facilities.
